What is white gold ring?

White gold ring is a mixture of  gold with other materials, such as silver, nickel or palladium. The reason why gold have to be mixed with other materials is because “white” is not a natural color of gold, so it must be mixed with other materials to make it white. Besides that, pure gold (24K) is too soft, so it must be mixed with other materials that harder than gold. This means 14K gold ring is slightly harder than 18K gold ring, because 14K gold ring contains more percentage of harder metal than 18K gold ring.

Rhodium plating often used to enhance the white color of white gold ring. Anyway, best quality white gold ring does not require rhodium plating to make it white. Nickel can cause allergies in some people, so I suggest you to use white gold ring with a mixture of palladium. However, if you have sensitive skin, you can still use nickel containing white gold ring with a condition that the ring is coated with rhodium, because rhodium is a hypo-allergenic material.

Maintenance

After some period of constant use, the color of white gold ring can be dull, and the color changed to green or yellow in some parts. When this happens, you only need to bring it to the jeweler to replated / recoated with rhodium with a reasonable price. For everyday maintenance, you may use warm water (do not use boiling water), soft brush and mild soap (I recommend that you use detergent free soap) to clean your white gold ring.

Titanium Ring

Titanium is a hypo-allergenic and corrosion free metal. This material is light weight but strong. Usually the colors of titanium are grey, but there’s also black titanium and some anodized with another color. Mens like titanium ring because “titanium” sounds cool (at least for me ) and they like the color too.

Tungsten Carbide Ring

Tungsten carbide is the hardest material from all the material that used to make mens rings (8 - 9 Mohs hardness scale, while diamond is 10). If you want scratch resistance ring, tungsten carbide ring is your best choice. Because it’s hard, you can wear it anytime anywhere, but one thing to remember, it’s like a two sides of coin, if there’s an accident, tungsten carbide is also hard to cut.
