Gold Diamond Rings - Practical Guide

By Ted Crist

One of the things (if not the first) to be prepared before your wedding is a wedding ring, and the choice usually it’s a gold diamond rings. History tells, gold diamond rings is used in weddings since hundreds of years ago. Ring means bond, while the diamond means forever. So we can say diamond ring = bond forever. The material used to make a wedding ring is usually gold. There are advantages and disadvantages of each material that used to make the ring, but most people choose gold because gold is the most common material used, never go out of fashion, and if it begin to dull, it can be polished again.

14K or 18K

As I know, there is no gold wedding ring made of 100% gold (24k) because it’s too soft (but there is 24K jewelry ring). To make a gold wedding ring, it must be mixed with other materials, usually alloy copper for rose gold or yellow gold ring and nickel or palladium for white gold ring (some people reported allergic to nickel, so you better choose palladium). Gold ring is divided into several types i.e. 9K, 14k and 18k. But for wedding or engagment ring usually is 14K or 18K gold ring. 14k gold contains 58% gold and the rest 42% is other materials, while 18K gold is 75% gold and the rest 25% is other materials. Because the other materials that used to mix with gold is harder than gold, the 14k gold is harder from 18k gold. So if you’re an active person, I suggest you to purchase 14k gold, if you are the person who will remove the ring at work or you work behind the desk, you can buy 18k gold.

White Gold or Yellow Gold

Yellow gold looks more classic, but sometimes it looks too vivid, so it doesn’t match with the clothes or jewelry that you used. In contrary, because it’s neutral color, white gold can be used in almost every occasion.

Diamond ring setting

There are several types of diamond ring settings, such as the bezel setting, Ballerina setting, bead setting, Channel Setting, Setting Cluster, Flush Setting, and Pave Setting. Settings may affect how the diamond will reflect light (whether the ring setting will block the light) and of course it will affect how the ring looks, just select the ring setting that most suit your personality.

Diamond Cut

There are several types of diamond cut (round brilliant cut, princess cut, step cut, etc) that will make a diamond shape looks different. but what most important is not what type of diamond cut, but it’s the two aspects of the cut, which is polish and symmetry. If the diamond not well polished, the surface of the diamond may not reflective and the sparkle won’t come out or it will be blurred. If the symmetry is poor, it will cause the light that enter the diamond won’t reflect to the surface of the diamond, and the light will exits the diamond.

Gold Diamond Rings

Gold Diamond Rings

When you find this article, I guess you are in a quest to find the ultimately best gold diamond ring… I think I’m too excessive (I’ve just watched Indiana jones :-) ) Well, just read this article and you might find something useful before you buy gold diamond ring.

In this guide, I will divide gold diamond ring into two different things, gold ring itself and diamond itself.

Gold ring

Gold Contain. Gold is quite soft material and divided into several category based on gold contain in the ring. Pure gold is 24K gold, and it’s too soft for wedding ring or engagement ring that you will wear it in daily activities. To make gold ring harder, it mixed with other materials which create 9K, 14K, and 18K gold ring. Bigger number means bigger gold contain but softer. 9k gold ring actually not categorized as gold, because the percentage of other materials is bigger than gold itself. If you want to learn more about gold contain Click Here.

Gold Color. The final color of gold ring determine by the material that alloyed with gold. The color of pure gold is yellow. 14K or 18K yellow gold is a mixture of gold with copper and silver. Gold alloyed with copper will create rose gold ring. While white gold is the alloy of gold with silver, nickel or palladium. Nickel can cause irritation for some people. If you have sensitive skin, it’s better if you buy white gold ring that does not contain nickel (e.g. gold alloyed with palladium). White gold oftenly plated with rhodium to enhance its white color.

Diamond

4 C’s of diamond. Before you choose the diamond for your ring, I suggest you to learn about the 4 C (Cut, Clarity, Color and Cut). This can save you from embarrassment. For example, if you buy the diamond because at a glance it looks good (you see it with naked eye), then you show it to your friends, and they tell you that the diamond is not well cut, much flaws, etc and for worst, it is fake!

Certified Diamond. If you want to buy good quality and expensive diamonds, buying a certified diamond is a must. You can be sure that the price is appropriate with the quality, and of course it’s a sign that you are buying a real diamond, not a fake one. But if you want cheaper price, diamond appraisal is enough.

Diamond ring settings. There are many diamond ring settings out there (prongs, bezel, channel, ballerina, flush etc). You can choose the one that you like, but you have to consider the construction of the diamond ring settings. There advantages and disadvantage of each diamond ring settings. Generally, lesser the part of the ring that hold the diamond, means more light will enter the diamond, but on the other hand, it will lower the strength to hold the diamond.

Conclusion

Learn these basic steps, and I hope you will get the gold diamond ring that suits your style, your passion and of course suits your budget. Happy hunting and have a nice day :-)
